Ok. I admit it. I'm 21 years old, a Junior in college, and I still
play with Lego bricks. If you have to ask why, forget it. You wouldn't
understand. Otherwise, if you're like me and YOU play with them
too, Come along. You might just have a little FUN.
Like most people, my Dark Ages began when I was about 16. My Lego bricks sat on my closet shelf, trapped and utterly lonely, for about 2.5-3 years. Then, in the summer of '96, it happened. I got the urge. At the time, I thought I was just bored, but I soon realized that it was much more than that. The Lego bricks were calling me. I couldn't resist any longer. I pulled the big Rubbermaid container down from the shelf, popped the lid, and started digging. Ahh, what a feeling.. There's nothing quite like it. After a few minutes of sifting, the dilemna struck me: What to build?
Since I had just been to the EAA Fly-in in Oshkosh, WI, the answer was obvious: Airplanes. I ended up completing two different jets that summer, and they are presented in detail below. (I actually ended up building a third plane as an experiment in wing design, but it looked like crap so it was quickly disassebled.)
I plan on adding some close-ups of the landing gear and a swept/un-swept wing comparison, but I don't have the pictures taken yet. In the mean time, a Quicktime VR object of the plane is available here. It's about 275k.
As a by-product of modeling the plane in POV-Ray, I rendered instructions for it as well. Hope you like them.
