Ok. I admit it. I'm 21 years old, a Junior in college, and I still play with Lego bricks. If you have to ask why, forget it. You wouldn't understand. Otherwise, if you're like me and YOU play with them too, Come along. You might just have a little FUN.

Here's my story:

Most people go through a period in their life known as their Dark Ages. This is the portion of their life when they stop playing with Lego bricks. It's a sad period that usually begins at about age 16 (when they become "too old" to play with them) and lasts until they have kids of their own (when they finally have an "excuse" to buy more). This is how it happens for most. Luckily, I realized what was going on and I was able to keep my personal Dark Ages to a minimum.

Like most people, my Dark Ages began when I was about 16. My Lego bricks sat on my closet shelf, trapped and utterly lonely, for about 2.5-3 years. Then, in the summer of '96, it happened. I got the urge. At the time, I thought I was just bored, but I soon realized that it was much more than that. The Lego bricks were calling me. I couldn't resist any longer. I pulled the big Rubbermaid container down from the shelf, popped the lid, and started digging. Ahh, what a feeling.. There's nothing quite like it. After a few minutes of sifting, the dilemna struck me: What to build?

Since I had just been to the EAA Fly-in in Oshkosh, WI, the answer was obvious: Airplanes. I ended up completing two different jets that summer, and they are presented in detail below. (I actually ended up building a third plane as an experiment in wing design, but it looked like crap so it was quickly disassebled.)

F-14 Tomcat

I decided to build an F-14 Tomcat for two main reasons: 1) I had a small plastic model of one on my shelf that I could reference when building, and 2) I really wanted to implement the swept-wing capability. I have mixed feelings about the final result. On the one hand, I like the way the wings and landing gear worked out. On the other hand, the nose *really* looks like crap. I just haven't had time to go back and change it.
Here are some pics:

I plan on adding some close-ups of the landing gear and a swept/un-swept wing comparison, but I don't have the pictures taken yet. In the mean time, a Quicktime VR object of the plane is available here. It's about 275k.

F-15 Eagle

I actually built my F-15 by accident. I was playing with some wing pieces and came up with the front wing assembly. I thought it looked kind of cool, so I built it into a jet. The end result resembled an F-15. Sweet. :) I liked it so much that I took the time to model it, piece by piece, using POV-Ray. Currently, the only pictures I have of the model are those that I rendered. I hope to get some pictures of the actual model taken soon. Until then, here's a rendered view:

As a by-product of modeling the plane in POV-Ray, I rendered instructions for it as well. Hope you like them.
